The decision was taken on Tuesday by the Oradea Court of Appeal, which admitted a request to this effect made by the Hungarian judicial authorities.

“Orders the recognition and enforcement of the criminal sentence of March 28, 2022 pronounced by the Court of Nyíregyháza (…), definitive by the judgment pronounced by the Debrecen Court of Appeal (…) by which the convicted person Stamatiu Dan was sentenced to life imprisonment for committing the crime of qualified murder (…) and attempted crime of qualified murder”, the Court’s decision states.

Doctor Stamatiu was investigated after he fatally shot his ex-mistress and seriously injured her husband in the summer of 2016. After seven years, he was definitively sentenced, by the Court of Appeal in Debrețin, to life imprisonment.

“The court found that the crimes were committed for nefarious reasons. The defendant could not process even 2 years after breaking up with the victim the fact that he was abandoned, and his actions were driven by the desire for revenge. His intention was to suppress the life of the victims. As an aggravating circumstance, the fact that two children were left orphaned by their mother and that their father is limited in their care due to the injuries suffered is noted. The life sentence applied to the defendant is proportional to the crime, sufficient to achieve the goals of the punishment and proportional to the seriousness of the act and the danger the defendant presents to society”, it is mentioned on the portal of the Debreţin Court of Appeal.

The doctor cannot be released on parole until he has served a period of 30 years of his sentence, and after that he is prohibited from entering the territory of Hungary for another 10 years.
