Romania, great victory at the World Hockey Championship, division 1! The tricolors captured Hungary

The Romanian national team is struggling to stay in the second echelon of world ice hockey and today it achieved a very important success in this regard. The Tricolors take part in this week’s World Championship, Division 1, Group A, which is being held in Bolzano (Italy), and the start has been disastrous.

The team coached by Dave MacQueen lost against Italy and Slovenia by the same score, 1-6, and the danger of relegation to Group B of Division 1 had become very high. In match 3, Romania faced Hungary, a team that last year played in the Elite Division (the highest level of the World Championship).

Our hockey players played a great game and won dramatically, score 2-1. No goals were scored in the first two periods, but Romania opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the 3rd period, through Balazs Peter (SC Miercurea Ciuc). The Hungarians equalized when there were a little more than 4 minutes to go, through Janos Hari, but in the last minute of the game Otto Sandor-Szekely (ACSH Gheorgheni) brought victory to Romania.

Thus, after 3 games, Romania has 3 points in the standings, but remains in last place for the time being, being tied with South Korea and Slovenia (it has a match in the minus). The Tricolors have two more matches to play in the current edition: against South Korea (May 3) and Japan (May 4) and are obliged to collect points to avoid finishing in last position, which brings with it relegation to Group B of the Division 1.

The first two places are promoted to the Elite Division, but for Romania it cannot be the case, staying in Group A being the only achievable goal. Romania plays in Group A of the 2nd Division since 2018.
