The Romanian athlete Alex Creţ won the bronze medal in the cat. 90 kg, on Saturday, at the European Judo Championships in Zagreb (Croatia).

With this success, Creţ took a big step towards qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris.

Cret defeated the Belarusian Aleksandr Sidorik in the second round, in the round of 16 he got past the Serbian Nemanja Majdov, in the quarters he won against the French Loris Tassier, but lost the semi-final against the Azerbaijani Eljan Hajiev, the former European junior champion from 2022.

In the match for the bronze, Creţ defeated the Dutch Noel van’t End, world champion in 2019, now in his tenth participation in the European Championships.

Romania won its last European medal in 2020, through Andreea Chiţu (cat. 52 kg), silver medal in Prague.

All at cat. 90 kg, Vlad Vişan was beaten in the first round by the Georgian Ghiorghi Jabniaşvili.

Within the cat. 100 kg, the Cuban-born Romanian Asley Gonzalez lost in the first round to the Russian Matvei Kanikovski, who later won the gold.

Vlăduţ Simionescu debuted with a victory over the Polish Grzegorz Teresinski in cat. +100 kg, but then lost in the round of 16 to Slovakian Marius Fizel, who later won the bronze.

Romania was represented by 10 athletes at the European Judo Championships in Zagreb: Alexandru Raicu (cat. 73 kg), Ioan Dziţac (cat. 73 kg), Adrian Şulcă (cat. 81 kg), Vlad Vişan (cat. 90 kg ), Alex Creţ (cat. 90 kg), Asley Gonzalez (cat. 100 kg) and Vlăduţ Simionescu (cat. +100 kg), for men, and for women Thailien Castillo-Garcia (cat. 57 kg), Florentina Ivănescu (cat. 63 kg) and Amanda Zuaznabar-Torres (cat. 63 kg).
