In Germany, medicine is placed on a pedestal, doctors are held in high esteem, and medical education is of particular interest.

But for various reasons, some German medical students move to other countries, including Bulgaria. If until recently, students from Western Europe turned to Romania to study medicine, now Bulgaria is at the top.

According to the Center for the Development of Higher Education, 7,500 Germans are currently studying medicine abroad.

Why do students from Germany go to study medicine in Hungary and Bulgaria, but not in Romania?

The center studied the application conditions and university fees for medical students at 84 universities outside Germany.

Tuition fees in Bulgaria are around 7,000 euros per year, and in Romania 6,000 euros.

Hundreds of Germans study medicine in Bulgaria

Most Germans study medicine in neighboring Austria – in 2021, their number was 2,585. About 2,000 study in Hungary, less than 800 in Poland, and the latest available information from Bulgaria shows that in 2019, about 600 Germans were studying at four medical universities in this country.

There are also useful hints for future students heading to Bulgaria and some of them are related to the low cost of living in this country.
