Agrarian customs of spring, at the Museum of Ethnography in Rupea

“The ploughman, spring agrarian custom” is the name of the exhibition taking place today, at the Museum of Ethnography “Gh. Cernea” from Rupea, an event that brings to the public’s attention for the first time the activity of the Romanian plowman or peasant who works the land.
The second aspect of the exhibition refers to Plowing as a custom that is still practiced in Rupea and several other neighboring towns. Preparations for this event have already begun, the scientific researcher of the Brașov Museum of Ethnography, Melania Mâța, tells Radio Tg.Mures:
We present the localities bordering Rupea with Ţara Oltului. The exhibition brings to the attention of the public both the custom and the agricultural tools that are presented in the exhibition and that were used in the past for field work. The exhibition is completed with photographs of this ritual from the villages of Cuciulata, Comăna de Sus, Comăna de Jos, Venetia de Sus, Venetia de Jos and Vad. Once, in the past, the custom was held on March 1 or St. George’s Day. Today, the Ploughman’s custom is held the day after Easter, after the religious service ends.
Agriculture has been man’s basic occupation since ancient times and working the land was a real ritual imposed by a strictly observed agricultural calendar.
Also, all the customs are related to the holidays and are based on the Romanian peasant’s faith in God.
