Romania tolerates rape and domestic violence, but also high-level corruption. These are the reproaches that the Americans bring to us in the latest report of the State Department. According to Romanian police data for the first months of 2024, the phenomenon of domestic violence is increasing in our country, and the number of assaults is higher.

The authors of the report say that the police have no procedures for enforcing and monitoring restraining orders and that the courts have handled very few cases of domestic violence.
We are also criticized for the lack of responsibility in terms of judicial supervision, and here the State Department gives the example of the case of Cătălin Cherecheș, who fled the country, even though he was convicted.
The Americans also talk about the pressures on journalists, placed by the government, and mention the case of Emilia Şercan. Why is the US State Department report important? Domestic violence on the rise
According to police data for the first months of 2024, the phenomenon of domestic violence is increasing in Romania, and the number of assaults is higher.
In the first months of 2024, the number of victims of violence reached almost 14 thousand, 3% more compared to the same period last year. This means that these people have been abused mentally and even physically by those close to them. Most cases were opened for beatings or other violence – almost 60% – while 12% of the victims were threatened by the aggressors.
Over 7,500 of the abuses took place in Romanian cities. Almost 1500 more compared to the rural environment. Regarding the place of abuse. Most of the victims were assaulted at home, exactly where they should feel the safest. However. 2,500 people were beaten or assaulted in the middle of the street, and in some situations passersby are the ones who notified the police.
Women are the ones who have suffered the most in recent months. Almost 10 thousand women in Romania have become victims of domestic violence. A little over 2,200 were children and 2,500 were men.
The police have issued almost 3,000 protection orders. In almost 350 situations, the aggressors also received electronic bracelets.
