The employment rate of the working-age population (15-64 years) was 63.0% in 2023. The percentage is decreasing compared to the previous year by 0.1 percentage points. Also, in 2023, the employment rate of the population aged 20-64 was 68.7%, increasing compared to the previous year by 0.2 percentage points. The active population of Romania was 8152.1 thousand people, of which 7696.5 thousand were employed and 455.6 thousand were unemployed.

As happened in previous years, the employment rate was higher for men (71.7%, compared to 54.3% for women). By residence, the occupancy rate was higher in urban areas (68.6%, compared to 57.1% in rural areas). The employment rate of young people (15-24 years) was 18.7%, and that of the elderly (55-64 years) 51.0%. The highest level of employment rate for people of working age was registered among higher education graduates (89.8%). 65.6% of people with an average level of education and 36.9% of those with a low level of education were employed. Employees, down compared to the previous year (-60.1 thousand people), still held the largest share (85.7%) in the total employed population. Likewise, self-employed workers and unpaid family workers represented 13.0% of the employed population. The distribution of the employed population by form of ownership shows that the private sector absorbed 82.8% of it, the public sector concentrated a percentage of 16.6%, and 0.6% of employed people worked in the mixed sector. Skilled workers accounted for 17.7% of the total employed population.
