The team of students from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca gathered under the Seismic Design Competition (SDC) banner won the 2nd place at the international seismic engineering competition in Seattle, Washington, United States of America

It is about the students Luca Zăhan (team captain), Adrian Zacharievici, Robert Teodorescu, Victor Mitea, Andrei Mitu, David Havrstiuc, Simona Halip, Bianca Bologa, Paula Bosi, Mădălina Rusu, Nicoleta Popa and Matei Dragoș.

They represented the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca at the 19th edition of the Seismic Design Competition, a competition in which the Cluj university has been participating since 2011. The results of the previous years culminated in three consecutive first place positions for the Cluj team.

The team was guided by Răzvan Mureșan, Denisa Dragomir, Diandra Jula, Sabina Nitulescu and teachers Ovidiu Prodan and Paul Mihai Moldovan.

The test in Seattle, carried out on the seismic platform, was a success, as indicated by the positioning of the result obtained by the students from Cluj. The model of the Cluj team brilliantly coped with the earthquake simulation. “She demonstrated the resilience and ingenuity of our team,” recalled SDC representatives from the Technical University.

On Monday afternoon, the University of Cluj organized an awards ceremony for the Seismic Design Competition student team that won the precious second place. Representatives of the companies that support the SDC activity were also present at the event, along with UTCN management and other members of the academic community. The competition model was brought to the event and set in motion. The ceremony took place at the UTCN hub in George Barițiu street no. 4-6.

“We are incredibly proud to have earned a spot on the podium at the Seismic Design Competition 2024, Seattle, Washington! This experience has taught us valuable lessons and strengthened our team in ways we never imagined,” said representatives of the winning team.

The Seismic Design Competition is an earthquake engineering competition held annually at a conference organized by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. The conference brings together specialists from both seismic engineering and related fields, who encourage students to get involved by practically addressing the problem of earthquakes.
