Saharan dust returned to our country on Tuesday and persists until Thursday, the National Meteorological Administration announces. Doctor Beatrice Mahler warns that this dust easily penetrates the lungs and causes local irritation.

Cars, streets, rooftops were covered in a fine layer of Saharan dust that returned in the early hours of the morning. Car owners had to clean their cars. Shop owners have also started washing windows.

The problem is that this dust is loaded with fine particles that enter the lungs.

“Being very fine particles, they have the possibility to enter the respiratory tract and produce local irritation. The most vulnerable are the people who are already known to have respiratory ailments and whom the authorities currently recommend not to leave the house if possible and to have spare medication”, emphasizes doctor Beatrice Mahler, manager of the “Marius Nasta” Institute of Pneumoftisiology.

Good news

According to the specialists of the National Meteorological Administration, starting this afternoon, the air mass loaded with Saharan dust particles will move to the northeast and away from the country.

The wave of Saharan dust affected Greece and a yellow-orange haze reached several regions, including Athens. In Greece it is the worst such episode in the last six years. Greece was also affected by such waves in March.

Saharan dust also reached central and northern Europe.
