The minimum national standards for conferring the titles of lecturer and university professor, the habilitation certificate and the doctorate degree, subject to public consultation by the Ministry of Education, also arouse criticism from one of the unions active within the University of Bucharest, namely the Gaudeamus Didactic Staff Union . He announces, through a press release sent to Edupedu.ro, that he is with the teaching staff of the Chemistry Faculty of the UB, who recently expressed their dissatisfaction with these standards.

According to Gaudeamus, “unfortunately, the public consultation regarding the latest CNATDCU standards, launched belatedly by the Ministry of Education is lacking in coherence and result, through the consultation procedure the ministry is only mimicking the fulfillment of a legal obligation, not being interested in a broad and serious discussion regarding the major consequences of the change in the minimum standards for obtaining the didactic titles of lecturer and professor”.

The trade union makes its position known a week after the Ministry of Education announced public debates, by specializations, on the subject of the Minimum Standards, after the short period initially dedicated to consultations sparked criticism. The public debates are held at the level of each CNATDCU specialized commission, between March 27 and May 20, according to the calendar announced by the Ministry.

The Gaudeamus trade union cites three reasons for the support given to the staff at the Faculty of Chemistry:

  • The fact that the development of standards overlaps with the transformation of CNATDCU from a National Council into a National Commission, “a new entity, with distinct attributions”.
  • The arguments submitted by the representatives of the Faculty of Chemistry in relation to the standards proposals developed by the Profile Commission of the current CNATDCU
  • The fact that “changing standards periodically irritates, more or less, the entire academic community, because at the union level, over the years, many opinions have been expressed and enough comments are generated to change the rules during the game, by ignoring laws or favoring certain specializations compared to others”.

The proposals for national minimum standards were initially put out for public consultation a month ago, They attracted recommendations but also criticism in the public consultation procedures. On the very last day, on March 22, those related to the field of chemistry were contested by professors of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest, as Edupedu.ro wrote here.

And Edupedu.ro reported a memo from a faculty of Al.I University. Cuza from Iași, sent last week, through which objections were raised to the minimum standards for the fields of Sociology, Administrative Sciences and Communication, the teachers from Iași also objecting to the short duration of the debate on this topic: the memo showed that an adequate consultation “was lacking absolutely, a series of criteria being imposed without any kind of argumentation or explanation of the principles that were the basis of their delimitation”.
