The total value traded in 2023 on the regulated market of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) and on the Multilateral Trading System (SMT) reached the level of 38.04 billion lei, increasing by over 58% year on year, while the number of transactions carried out at BVB – on the regulated market and SMT – amounted to almost 1.98 million, the equivalent of an advance of more than 18% compared to the level recorded in 2022, according to the data transmitted by ASF on Tuesday.

In parallel, the stock market capitalization on the regulated market reached, at the end of 2023, the level of 294.2 billion lei, an increase of approximately 49.2% year/year.

And the Romanian stock indices recorded positive developments at the end of December 2023 compared to the end of 2022. Thus, the BET reference index, which includes the developments of the most traded companies on the BVB regulated market, had an increase of 31.79% at December 29, 2023 compared to the end of 2022.

In the case of government securities, the value of transactions decreased in 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, at a level of approximately 3.2 billion lei.

“Shares remain the dominant class of financial assets, with a share of almost 65% of the total value traded on the BSE until December 29, 2023,” states the ASF report.

At the end of 2023, a total number of 28 intermediaries were operating on the regulated market administered by BVB, including 18 Financial Investment Services Companies (SSIFs), 3 local credit institutions and 7 entities authorized in other EU member states. Also, 22 intermediaries were active within the SMT, of which 17 Financial Investment Services Companies (SSIF), 3 local credit institutions and 2 entities authorized in other EU member states.

During the reference period, the most active intermediaries on the BVB (regulated market and SMT) were the local credit institutions, the value intermediated by them being approximately 37.3 billion lei. Local intermediaries (SSIF and credit institutions) achieved approximately 93% of the total value mediated. Among the intermediaries authorized in other EU member states that carried out transactions on the spot markets, the most active were investment firms, accumulating a market share of 4.46%.

On December 31, 2023, the SSIFs had in custody a cumulative value of assets of 30.79 billion lei, representing both customer cash and financial securities held by them. The cumulative number of active customer accounts of SSIFs at the end of 2023 was 84,687.

The total value of the assets of collective investment undertakings (CIOs) in Romania was, at the end of Q4/2023, approximately 36.4 billion lei, down by 1% compared to the previous quarter and also down by around 14 % compared to the level registered at the end of 2022.

At the end of December 2023, 17 administrators were operating in Romania, of which 6 were exclusively authorized as investment management companies (SAI), 2 were exclusively authorized as alternative investment fund administrators (AFIA), and 9 had dual authorization. Also, at the end of 2023, 92 collective investment schemes in securities (OPCVM), 36 alternative investment funds (AIF), which include the 6 investment companies (SI) and Fondul Proprietatea, were authorized. The storage services for the 128 OPCs were provided by 4 depositors.

An analysis by category of collective investment bodies shows that in 2023, compared to the previous year, there were decreases in total assets for FPs (minus 79.82%) and increases in total assets for SIFs (27.14% ), UCITS (16.74%) and FIA (10.54%).

On December 29, 2023, the first three SAIs managed approximately 71.18% of the UCITS assets and 64% of the FIA ​​assets.

On the same date, the net assets related to the six SIs accumulated approximately 13.44 billion lei, up 25% compared to the end of 2022, when a level of 10.69 billion lei was recorded.
