The Professional Boxing League made the sad announcement and delivered an emotional message in memory of the man who was Rudel Obreja.

“It is with deep pain in our hearts that we announce the passing of former boxer Rudel Obreja. Smooth journey among the stars, dear friend! May God rest him in peace!” announced the Professional Boxing League.

“BOX. Have a smooth ride, Rudel Obreja! Former Dynamo champion Rudel Obreja passed away today at the age of 57. The announcement was made by his family. Born on August 6, 1965 in Galati, Rudel Obreja was a bronze medalist at the 1989 World Championship and silver at the 1989 European Championship. He was also a multiple winner of the Golden Belt and the title national. God forgive him! Condolences to the family!”, CS Dinamo Bucharest also sent.

Rudel Obreja was suffering from cancer

Rudel Obreja was sick with cancer. In the last months of his life, the former president of the Romanian Boxing Federation was visibly weakened, unrecognizable, and moved with great difficulty.

A few months ago, the Ilfov Court had ordered that Rudel Obreja be released from the Jilava Penitentiary, so that he could be treated for cancer.

“I need treatment in humane conditions, the care of doctors and my family, extremely important in the current context and here’s why: I sit in a hospital room, almost all the time with infusions, which alleviate my severe pain; I am guarded by guards in the salon, hand to hand, day and night; I don’t have a phone, only five visits a month from my wife, so I don’t have the ability to move to start treatment or surgery. I ask that my right conferred by law to interrupt the execution of the sentence be recognized, in order to start medical procedures in Romania or abroad! I want to live! But for that I need procedures,” Rudel Obreja said in a message posted last year on Facebook.

“I have metastatic cancer. Cruel! Even though I had two illegal convictions, for violating the laws and the Romanian Constitution in order to be sent to prison, I never escaped, I will not do so from now on. Optimistic… curable… at least from cancer!”, said Rudel Obreja at the time.

He was imprisoned at the beginning of April 2022, after the Supreme Court confirmed the 5-year prison sentence received in the ‘Gala Bute’ case.
