Bad breath in the morning is often dismissed as just a common affliction. However, experts warn that this seemingly innocent symptom could be a warning sign of a serious condition such as cancer.
Bad breath in the morning could be a warning sign of fatal cancer, experts warn. If improving your oral hygiene doesn’t eliminate bad breath, it’s time to see a health professional, an expert has warned.
Bad breath is a common problem. Aside from poor oral hygiene, the most typical cause of this is having a dry mouth overnight. Eating a large meal before bed could also be to blame.

Bad breath, a sign of fatal cancer
However, there may be a more sinister cause, health bodies have warned. Bad breath – or halitosis – is a lesser-known symptom of a fatal disease.
According to the NHS and Cancer Research UK, bad breath is a symptom of laryngeal cancer, a disease that affects the larynx.
“The larynx is the part of the throat found at the entrance to the trachea (trachea). It has an important role in helping breathing and speaking,” notes the NHS.
Laryngeal cancer is more common in people over the age of 60. It is more common in men than women.
Bad breath is listed by the NHS as a potential symptom of laryngeal cancer. According to the University of California San Francisco Health, this sign is more likely to appear in the later stages.

The NHS says the main symptom of laryngeal cancer is having a hoarse voice for more than three weeks.
Other symptoms include:

– Pain when swallowing or difficulty swallowing
– A lump or tumor in the throat
– A prolonged cough or difficulty breathing

– Fatigue (extreme tiredness).
The NHS adds that a person who has a hoarse voice for more than three weeks should see a doctor.
“These symptoms are often caused by less serious conditions such as laryngitis, but it’s a good idea to get them checked out. If necessary, your GP can refer you to a hospital specialist for more tests to confirm or rule out cancer “, the NHS also notes.
