In a few days, the Prince and Princess of Wales will celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary. Although this is quite impressive, the couple have been in each other’s lives for more than twenty years, writes OK! magazine.

Very few of us need to remember that the royal couple met when they were both students at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001. While they both started out as just friends, their closeness quickly turned into a relationship.

As you can imagine, when Prince William enrolled at university, he found himself quite the center of attention when it came to advances from young women. This made William quite nervous as he was “too polite” and did not know how to refuse their favor.

But it seems his close friend Catherine Middleton had a clever tactic to help William before they started dating. According to a mutual friend of the couple, Kate taught Prince William a brilliant tactic to get him out of awkward situations.

The couple met in their freshman year when they were both living at St. Savior’s Residence and would later live with each other. While the couple have been married for 13 years as of April 29 and have three children, their early years together as students sound idyllic.

It is well known that the two were very close friends before they got romantically involved. So much so that they even had a clever trick to get out of awkward social situations.

Speaking to royal expert Katie Nicholl for her book Kate: The Future Queen, their mutual friend Laura Warshauer said: ‘Will was really smitten with this girl at a party and he was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn’t shake her.
“He was very polite, but this girl just didn’t get the hint. Suddenly Kate came up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. He said “Oh, I’m sorry, but I have a girlfriend.” and he and Kate left giggling.”

William was very grateful for her help and, according to Laura, he told her “thank you very much” afterwards. She said: “Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done it. And that was only a month after I started university.”

After their first year, the couple moved in with two other housemates, Fergus Boyd and Olivia Bleasdale, at 13A Hope Street, which cost the four students £100 a week each.
In their third and fourth years, Prince William and Kate made their home together in a private house located off campus that belonged to one of William’s distant cousins.

The couple chose to move to Balgove House at Strathtyrum for their third and fourth years at university. It was a sprawling private estate just outside St Andrews. The property is owned by wealthy landlord Henry Cheape, a distant cousin of Prince William and a close friend of the royal family.

The country house was made safe for the young couple to live in as unmarked police cars patrolled the property and the house itself was set behind a large wall and had bomb proof doors and windows.
