While all her friends go to the mall to blow money on fast-fashion containers brought in from Bangladesh, full of toxic paints and the occasional bedbug, one woman with imagination – and who cares about our planet – reuses discarded packaging, turning them into true haute couture masterpieces.
Probably the best-known eco-fashionista in Bucharest is Gina, a 33-year-old corporatist who discovered her passion while preparing for recycling the empty beer cans left by her husband on the dining room table. “It had just been the Oscars, I had seen some amazing costumes there and I thought: wow, how beautiful a dress made of beer cans would be! They are colorful, shiny, some have a cute deer or bear on them…”, says Gina, proud of her creation.
“It’s true that Marian had only drunk two beers,” adds the woman. “You can’t make an evening dress out of two beer cans. Then I got an idea! I asked him if he would like to invite his friends to watch football. It was a great match, Petrolul-Botoșani with Rapid-Galați or something like that!”
After picking up a few dozen cans of beer, Gina got down to business, and three days later she had a sizzling outfit that would have made even Lady Gaga cringe. “But by far the most impressed are the boys. When I pass by a construction site dressed as a beer pyramid, I feel like Miss Universe”, says Gina.
According to fashion experts, this approach also has other advantages, such as that you no longer need so much space in your closet. When she gets bored with an outfit, the sustainable fashionista can remove the packaging, take it to the recycler and get back her 50-money guarantee for each of them to buy needles and thread for new clothing adventures.
