US blames Russia for cyber attacks in Europe: We strongly condemn the actions of the Russian intelligence service

American diplomacy condemned, on Friday, a recent campaign of cyber attacks in Europe and assigned Russia the responsibility for these actions, as the German and Czech governments have already done, reports AFP, according to Agerpres.

“The United States strongly condemns the malicious cyber activities carried out by the Russian military intelligence service (GRU) (…) against Germany, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden,” said a Department of Defense spokesman. State, Matthew Miller, according to a statement.

The attack was carried out, Washington says, by the group known as APT28, “a well-known dangerous actor with a long history of malicious, nefarious, destabilizing and disruptive practices.”

The State Department mentions in particular that it has imposed sanctions against “actors” because of the group’s activities during the 2016 US presidential election or that targeted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In the case of cyber attacks in Europe, the American authorities cooperated with Germany to block routers used by the attackers, the release states.

The German and Czech governments on Friday accused the group of Russian hackers controlled by Moscow of a recent campaign of cyber attacks in their countries, “malicious behavior” to which the EU promised a strong response.

APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, has been active worldwide since at least 2004, primarily in the field of cyber espionage. According to Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, it is one of the most active and dangerous cyber actors in the world.
