The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, asked the United States on Sunday to prevent an Israeli invasion in the city of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, AFP and Reuters report, quoted by Agerpres.

“We call on the United States to ask Israel to end the Rafah operation, as the US is the only country capable of preventing Israel from committing this crime,” Abbas said at a World Economic Forum meeting on the economic consequences of the war in The Gaza Strip.

He stated that such an operation, announced by Israeli officials, would be “the greatest disaster in the history of the Palestinian people.”

The current conflict between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas erupted after the terrorist attack of an unprecedented scale carried out on October 7, 2023 by Palestinian militant commandos in southern Israel, when at least 1,170 people were killed. More than 250 other people were taken hostage and taken to the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army retaliated with a bombing campaign, followed by a ground operation, against Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip, Israeli military actions have so far resulted in 34,380 dead and over 77,000 wounded Palestinians.
