Secret documents, which have only just been revealed, have determined which city will be the first to be blasted into oblivion in the event of a nuclear war.

General Nuclear War are recently declassified documents that have been kept top secret by the US government, revealing that if the unspeakable were to happen, Washington DC could be the first city to be annihilated , according to dailystar.co.uk.

The documents suggest that the region could be hit by a “surprise attack” involving a one-megaton thermonuclear bomb, The Mail on Sunday first reported.

This attack “flashing” would come without any prior warning and “it’s what everyone in Washington DC fears the most,” according to Andrew Weber, former assistant secretary of defense for nuclear, chemical, and biological defense programs.

Such a bomb would set off an explosion that could reach 100 million degrees Celsius in its core – five times hotter than the center of the Sun. The intense heat and speed of the explosion would make “the concrete to crack, the metal to liquefy or vaporize, the stone to fracture, and the individuals to burn instantly to carbon,” according to The Sun.

Some experts have suggested that those vaporized in the initial explosion would be “lucky”, compared to those who would initially survive the fallout. The former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Craig Fugate, told The Mail on Sunday that the only hope for survivors is “self-survival”.

“We have to get over the mental block that says it’s too terrible to think about,” he said in an earlier interview. “We need to be prepared to deal with it and help people learn how to best protect themselves.”

This revelation comes as tensions in the Middle East are rising due to the current conflict between Israel and Palestine and the recent involvement of Iran which, according to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is only weeks away from having enough uranium enriched to create an atomic bomb.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also recently warned that his nuclear weapons exist “to use them”two years after his invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking on Russian national television, he declared that his country was ready for nuclear war – both technically and militarily – and that they were prepared to use weapons of mass destruction.
