“I’m suspending my campaign”: Donald Trump created a surprise on Monday by sending this message to his supporters, an April 1 joke, which was actually intended to raise new funds for his candidacy in the presidential elections in November, reports AFP.
The former Republican president, who is trying to oust Democrat Joe Biden from the White House, sent this short text to his constituents via email and text along with a link.
By accessing the message, his supporters arrived at a website and were asked to donate $5,500 or $3,300 to the election campaign.
“Did you really think I would suspend my campaign? April Fools!” Trump wrote in all caps.
For several years, American voters have been bombarded with text messages, e-mails and calls asking them to contribute financially to candidacies.
This forces candidate teams to be increasingly creative in order to stand out. In a country where electoral victories are won with billions of dollars, the donations they collect are extremely valuable.
Donald Trump is constantly attracting supporters by talking about his legal problems.
