Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, said on Tuesday that he sent a message to the United States in which he holds it responsible, as Israel’s main ally, for the attack that destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, informs the EFE agency, quoted by Agerpres .

Amir-Abdollahian explained that in the early hours of the morning he summoned the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, who represents the interests of the United States on Iranian territory, to convey a message to Washington about Monday’s attack in the Syrian capital.

“In this convocation, the dimensions of the terrorist attack and the crime of the Israeli regime were explained, and the responsibility of the American government was emphasized,” explained the senior Iranian diplomat on the “X” social network, formerly Twitter.

“An important message was sent to the American government as an ally of the Zionist regime. The United States must respond,” Amir-Abdollahian insisted.

In the attack that destroyed the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, seven members of the Revolutionary Guard were killed, including the head of the Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and his second in command, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi. In total, 11 people would have lost their lives as a result of the airstrike.

Monday’s attack marked the heaviest loss suffered by the Revolutionary Guards since that of General Qassem Soleimani

The Quds Force is considered the elite unit of the Guardians, which intervenes outside its borders to help Iran’s neighbors and ensure the “stability” of the region against Western interference, according to Tehran. But in essence it is a military branch specialized in asymmetric warfare and activities specific to intelligence agencies.

In early 2020, its charismatic leader, General Qassem Soleimani, was eliminated in a US raid on the Baghdad airport ordered by former President Donald Trump.

Monday’s incident is the deadliest attack against the Iranian military in Syria since early 2024, where eight people have so far been confirmed killed in Israeli bombing, including two Revolutionary Guard generals.

The US told Iran that it had “no involvement” and was not aware of an Israeli attack on a diplomatic compound in Syria in advance. Israel has not confirmed or denied that it launched the attack on Damascus, its standard procedure in such situations.

“We do not comment on foreign media reports,” an Israeli military spokesman said late Monday when asked about the matter.
