Between 04-06 May, 45 interventions were recorded in the liquidation of dry vegetation outbreaks, which affected about 100 hectares of land, announces the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.

Thus, in the morning of Sunday, May 6, the flames consumed 5 hectares of dry grass in the Ialoveni district, Milestii Noi township. Moreover, in Ungheni district, Chirileni village, the flames destroyed 15 hectares of vegetation.

“According to the information presented by the Environmental Protection Inspectorate and the employees of the National Public Security Inspectorate, during the mentioned period, 77 minutes of contravention were drawn up against the people who took the actions that caused the vegetation to burn, of which: 53 minutes amounting to 263 950 lei and 24 minutes with the application of 960 hours of unpaid work for the benefit of the community”, informs IGSU.

To prevent outbreaks of burning dry vegetation, the employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations continue to inform and warn citizens.

“Since the beginning of 2024, the Inspectorate’s specialists have informed 87,891 people about the measures that must be followed to avoid the risk of wildfires occurring and spreading over large areas. Prevention activities took place in 1448 localities in the Republic of Moldova with the aim of minimizing the risk of dry grass fires,” the release states.

Inspectorate specialists warn citizens that wildfires present an eminent danger to the housing sector, the environment, but also to people’s lives and health. Also, the rescuers announce that in conditions of strong wind and high temperatures, any spark can favor the outbreak of large-scale wildfires.

“People are asked not to set fire to dry vegetation, household garbage and reeds, but also to avoid using open fire to sanitize households. People are urged not to throw cigarette butts, matches or other lit objects on dry grass areas, around forest spaces and agricultural land. Children must be strictly monitored by adults to prevent them from playing with fire and other sources of ignition,” IGSU adds.

According to the data collected from the territorial subdivisions of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, since the beginning of 2024, 1,240 interventions by firefighters were recorded to extinguish dry vegetation burning outbreaks, as a result of which more than 2,500 hectares of land were affected.
