Many Romanians want to buy cherries, but complain about their price. One kilogram ends up costing 100 lei in markets and supermarkets, but there are also places with lower prices.
Where to find cheap cherries
In the orchards of Păuleşti, Prahova county, the kilogram of cherries is sold for 20-25 lei, 30 maximum, while in markets or supermarkets we find the same kilogram of cherries for 70-100 lei. Păulești is known for its tasty and juicy cherries, according to observernews.
Cherries, more expensive than a gram of gold
In many stores, cherries are more expensive than a gram of gold and many Romanians say they cannot afford to buy them. However, traders do not seem to be affected at all. Moreover, some of them consider the price to be normal, even promoting their sales through social networks.
“Dear ones, yesterday you sold out of the stock of cherries from the “fruit cart” in Palas Mall, so today we replenished the stock and brought cherries to our grocery store for only 249 lei per kilogram. We are waiting for you!” says a trader on Tik Tok.
The Romanians revolted
Netizens couldn’t get over the trader’s post and left a series of nasty comments. They stated that the prices were insane and that they would have to take out a bank loan to eat these fruits.
“For the 249 lei, I suspect that it comes with everything with a tree, otherwise the price is not explained, honestly…”. “Swapping that box for a 2005 Logan 1.4 mpi? It doesn’t have AC…I offer the difference”. “I’m going to the bank to see if they’ll give me credit for the “first cherry”, are some of the people’s comments.
Other Romanians stated that they are waiting for it to get cheaper and that few people can afford to pay so much for a kilo.
“Very much, it will sit there like a museum,” someone says. “Very much, at the minimum wage in the economy you can’t really afford it. When ours comes out, we will eat it too. Until then, we’re watching,” another person said.
