Orthodox Christians celebrate today the Great Martyr Saint George

Orthodox Christians today celebrate one of the greatest martyrs, Saint George – the bearer of victory.

Saint George is considered the defender of the army and the military. The martyr was the only and beloved son of a widow, raised with a lot of love and faith. The young man expressed his desire to become a soldier and enlisted in the army, and in battles he was always the first and had the heart of a lion. Thus, it became general.

Saint George confesses his faith in Christ, which is why he is imprisoned and subjected to various tortures. Saint George approached the spring with his spear, and the enraged beast tried to swallow him. Then the martyr faithfully threw a wooden cross into the open mouth of the snake. That is why Saint George in the icons is depicted as a horseman with a spear in his hand, which has a cross at the top and which kills the beast.

Popular tradition says that on this day flowers are picked and wreaths are woven. Saint George is one of the most honored saints, many churches bear the patron saint in honor of the martyr.
