Millions of households must do an urgent account check ahead of May Bank Holiday

--

Millions of households are urged to do an account check before the May Bank Holiday weekend. Any DWP and HMRC payments that happen to be scheduled for Saturday, May 4, Sunday, May 5, or the bank holiday Monday, May 6, will be processed early.

The cash is expected to appear in bank or building society accounts on Friday, May 3, instead. You’ll need to make sure it’s there before close of business on Friday as there’ll be no chance to contact the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs until Tuesday, May 7, if it hasn’t arrived.

Not only would it mean you’re left without cash over the bank holiday, but any late payments issued on Tuesday probably won’t go in for at least another day. So you’d be without money for five days.

READ MORE:

Payments that have been brought forward should go in either late on Thursday night or on Friday morning. If the money hasn’t landed by early afternoon on Friday, contact the office that issues the money or the specific helpline for the benefit you are receiving.

The 12 payments affected are:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • State Pension
  • Universal Credit
  • Tax credits (such as Working Tax Credit)

What time does the money go in?

Depending on your bank, funds are available sometime after midnight on the day they are due. Some banks deposit money into your account around 11.30pm so you can withdraw it before midnight on benefits payday.

Others will release your funds at midnight or just a few minutes after that. But in some cases, you have to wait until 2am to 3am and others will not let you touch your money until at least 6am on payday.

Here is an updated list of the typical paying-in times for banks. With some accounts, money may show as pending but the funds will not be available to withdraw until at least 6am-7am.

Santander – 9.30pm-10pm the night before (by midnight at the latest)
