Ahead of today’s pre-order availability announcement, we had the opportunity to make first contact with the Huawei Pura 70 series, which includes, in addition to the base Pura 70 model, the Pro and Ultra editions. From the start I have to make the particularly important clarification on the way “Pura” is pronounced, namely “Piura”. It might even have been preferable if we also had an “umlaut” on “u”, like in German :), to understand exactly how “u” is pronounced. So, not “Pura” as it is spelled, but pronounced “Piura”.

Why do we no longer have the “P” series and it’s switched to “Pura”? Because all other Huawei phones had distinct names and not letters – Nova, Mate. So, one more series switches to a four-letter name, and so the range for Romania, at least, is aligned from this point of view.

Now that we got rid of this special mention, we can see the prices, and then the promotion valid at the moment, more precisely the one valid for pre-order, that is, between May 2 and 21, 2024.

Recommended retail prices Huawei Pura 70 series:

Until May 21, 2024, for each of the three models, any customer will receive two additional Huawei products as a gift, therefore completely free of charge. It is a Huawei Watch GT 3 smartwatch and a pair of Huawei FreeBuds Pro 3 headphones. The two gifts have a total value of no less than 1,500 lei, so the promotion seems really attractive to me.

How to proceed to benefit from the pre-order promotion of the Huawei Pura 70 series:

  • HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 3 Headphone Bundle – automatically received upon purchase
    to any HUAWEI Pura 70 Series phone. The user just has to select
    desired color.
  • Voucher for the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 smartwatch, which can be obtained as follows:
  1. On the HUAWEI Pura 70 Series product page, the user navigates to the “Custom Package” section, selects the desired color of the WATCH GT 3 product (White or Black) and adds it to the shopping cart;
  2. Add the HUAWEI Pura 70 Series product to the same shopping cart;
  3. In the My Cart page, which now contains the main product HUAWEI Pura 70 Series and the secondary products HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 3 and HUAWEI WATCH GT 3, apply the valid discount code for HUAWEI WATCH GT 3, which can be found on the dedicated HUAWEI Pura 70 Series page;
  4. Complete the order successfully.

I wouldn’t want to load this article with specs lists for every model in the Pura 70 series, I can rather put links for each of the three phones:

Now, let me say a few words about the top models of the range, namely the Pura 70 Pro and the Pura 70 Ultra, as I have had the most contact with them. The basic version, let’s call it the Huawei Pura 70, is really a bit more special in terms of design, with the main difference being the chassis with flat edges. Otherwise, the back, more precisely the camera module, is as close in design as possible among the three.

So, a few words about Huawei Pura 70 Pro. I say from the very beginning that I have already received a test unit and that I will bring full details in a few days in an explicit review.

Here I want to specify that the entire Huawei Pura 70 series introduces a new solution for accessing Google applications and those that require Google Services. Called microG, this solution simplifies even more the process of installing all the desired applications, and compatibility with Huawei devices is maximum. It’s something I’ll be thoroughly testing on the Huawei Pura 70 Pro, for now here are the first impressions.

The Huawei Pura 70 Pro comes with a screen that covers most of the front area, with very narrow bezels on all four sides. The glass that protects the display is very slightly curved on each side, and this generates an appearance as premium as possible.

The chassis is also curved, it is metal, and this makes the Huawei Pura 70 Pro an extremely solid, robust phone. It’s not the thinnest or lightest, but it’s more than acceptable.

The back is flat, but takes up the theme of the screen, meaning it’s very slightly curved towards the chassis on all four sides. There are two color versions available in our country – white and black, and both come with sandblasted glass, let’s call it. It is matte, very pleasant to the touch and does not catch fingerprints.

The module with the three sensors on the back is in the form of a triangle with strongly rounded corners. Both this, and especially each lens of each camera, emerge something from the overall profile of the phone.

The layout of the ports and other external elements can be examined from the pictures above.

Linked Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, this is almost identical in design to the Pro model, with the main differences at the back. There, we have different types of materials, with some that imitate leather and with diamond patterns. There are three shades available with us: green, brown and black. The second big difference is in the camera module, with a different arrangement of sensors (the main one is now under the large lens, the periscope one has moved down). In addition, an additional “sector” appears, where the name XMAGE and the LED flash are.

But most importantly, essentially the distinctive and unique element for the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, is all about the rear cameras. Here, the large, main sensor has a mechanism that allows the lens to pop out when in use. It is a fully automatic, electrically operated movement. Such a solution was chosen precisely to keep the maximum thickness of the phone as low as possible, when the rear camera is not used, obviously.

Why was this mechanism needed? From the presentation of Huawei officials, for even better quality of photos and videos. A greater physical distance between the optical center of the glass lens assembly and the sensor allows more light to enter, but also better sharpness. For example: have you noticed that the best camera lenses, which are usually the most expensive, are very large. And this is not only valid for those with long focal lengths (300 – 600 mm), but also for wide ones and even primes (lenses without optical zoom, with fixed focal length). Basically, more space between the optical center of the lens system and the sensor leads to higher quality on the photo-video side.

What I noticed in the few minutes of contact with the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is that the rear camera module is quite massive. Not necessarily in volume, in size, but in weight. Basically, the center of gravity of the phone on the longitudinal axis moves quite strongly towards the top. Thus, you feel the phone hard towards the upper area and it is a sensation that you will have to get used to.

No more details for the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, we will most likely have this one for the test as well, maybe for a thorough examination on the photo-video side, after we present the Pura 70 Pro in detail first.

I’m curious what you think of the new Huawei Pura 70 series, so I’m waiting for some impressions from you in the comments section.
