The new gas power plant from Mintia, in Hunedoara county, with an investment estimated at 1.4 billion euros, received the environmental approval this week from the Hunedoara Environmental Protection Agency.

“The new plant will produce electricity in more environmentally friendly conditions, thanks to very low emissions of PM 10 and PM 2.5 dust, with minimal impact on the environment. What’s more, the sulfur oxides that were in the past among the plant’s emissions no longer exist in the new project, according to the documents that formed the basis of the agreement. According to the colleagues from APM Hunedoara, who managed all this approach from the point of view of environmental protection, the first turbine will arrive at the plant by the end of May”, announced Laurentiu Alexandru Păştinaru, president of APM.

The Mass Global Energy Rom company, which purchased the Mintia Thermal Power Plant, announced investments of 1.4 billion lei, to be completed in 2026. The investments aim to transform the thermal power plant into the largest and most efficient gas-fired electricity production capacity in the European Union .

“Let’s hope it will do the area a lot of good, first of all because the fuel is changing. It will no longer burn coal, but methane gas, and the impact on climate change will also exist in this case, because methane gas is all carbon, but the other pollutants that caused problems will be eliminated: dust and sulfur oxides. From the point of view of the authorization work, in addition to applying the legislation for assessing the impact on the environment, on biodiversity or the health of the population, we also had to consult with Hungary and Serbia, both of which expressed their support for the project”, said the director executive of APM Hunedoara, Georgeta Barabaş, at the ceremony of handing over the Environmental Agreement to Mass Global Energy.

The assets of the Mintia thermal power plant were sold last year by the Romanian state to the Mass Global Energy Rom company, part of the Iraq Mass Group Holding group, the transaction amounting to 91.2 million euros, excluding VAT.

According to available data, Mass Group Holding is an Iraqi group registered in the Cayman Islands with its headquarters in Amman, Jordan. According to the Mass Group Holding website, the group has about 7,100 MW in energy production units in Iraq, but also a 100 MW wind energy project in Jordan. The group also has activities in the cement and steel industry.
