Approximately fifty Mexican journalists demonstrated on Saturday after the assassination of their colleague Roberto Carlos Figueroa Bustos, whose body was found on Friday in the state of Morelos (center), according to local media, writes AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

“We strongly condemn the horrible crime of our comrade (…) His assassination represents a new example of the terrible violence that reigns in Morelos, a state where no one is safe”, declared the journalists who demonstrated in Cuernavaca, the capital of this state located south of Mexico City.

“The kidnapping and assassination of Figueroa represents a serious attack on freedom of expression,” they added in their statement.

The journalist, director of the online media Aca en El Show, followed by approximately 10,000 people on Facebook, published content of a political nature.

The body was found in his car in Coajomulco, in the state of Morelos, together with that of another man, according to local media.

The journalist “was deprived of his freedom, and his relatives received a call demanding a ransom. Although it was paid, he was found dead”, denounced the organization for the defense of the press Articulo 19 on the X social network.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) told AFP that it is trying to find out more details about this assassination.

The NGO for the defense of the press asked on Friday the three candidates for the presidential elections in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for the press, from June 2, to commit to protecting journalists in case of victory.

According to RSF, at least 37 journalists were assassinated during the five and a half years of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s mandate, which will end on October 1.

And since 1995, at least 156 journalists have been killed for investigating organized crime, insecurity and drug trafficking, according to the same source.
