Venice authorities have decided to introduce a new measure to manage congestion in the city: the entrance fee for tourists on weekends. Starting on April 25 and until mid-July, visitors will have to pay a €5 entrance fee to enter the city on Saturdays and Sundays.

This initiative aims to reduce the large number of tourists and, implicitly, manage the flow of people in a more efficient way.

The €5 entrance fee must be paid by all visitors over the age of 14 who enter Venice between 8.30am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. This tax applies regardless of the means of transport used to get to the city, be it by train, ferry or other mode of transport.

Admission to the historic lagoon city of Venice will be charged for certain weekends until mid-July.

The charge applies on 29 specific days between April 25 and July 14, inclusive. These days include: 25-30 April, 1-5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 May, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 June and 6, 7, 13 and July 14th.

Payment exemptions are provided for the following categories of people:

– Children under 14 years old,

-Persons born in Venice and the Veneto region,

– Holders of the European card for persons with disabilities and their companions,

-Tourists staying overnight in hotels in Venice.

Venice City Hall aims to discourage hit and run tourism on certain days when the number of visitors is highest.

For those who do not follow the rules, the authorities impose fines between 50 and 300 euros.
