On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) is to take an important decision regarding judge Ancuța Ioana Popoviciu, who is at the center of a controversy related to the management of Vlad Pascu’s file. Upon leaving the CSM hearings, the judge stopped in front of the journalists, as if prepared to answer their questions. Only, that Popoviciu resorted to the right to remain silent. He sat in front of the press for a minute and did not answer any questions.

Ancuta Ioana Popoviciu

Ancuța Ioana Popoviciu could be suspended from her position until the completion of the disciplinary investigation initiated by the Judicial Inspection. The suspension of the judge from Mangalia could take place after the Judicial Inspection self-reported following the judge’s behavior at two consecutive terms of the trial. The biggest blunder was in the first term, where the magistrate who is judging this case, being Ioana Ancuța Popoviciu, asked if the victim was in the room and asked for the dead boy’s bulletin. This procedural mistake led to a disciplinary investigation, while Ancuța Ioana Popoviciu requested his recusal from the case, a request that was rejected.

We remind you that Vlad Pascu is on trial for committing the crimes of manslaughter, culpable bodily harm, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances and leaving the scene of the accident. When she appeared, on Thursday, February 22, judge Popoviciu asked if one of the murdered students was also at the trial, referring to Sebastian.

This is not the first disciplinary incident of judge Ancuța Popoviciu. She has been sanctioned in the past, when her pay was cut for a period of several months, also due to similar behavior in the courtroom.

Also, the families of the victims of the accident requested the transfer of the file to another court, a request that has so far been rejected. Thus, all parties involved are now awaiting the Council’s decision.

Update:

The CSM decided. Judge Ancuța Popoviciu, who is handling the case of Vlad Pascu, the drugged driver who fatally injured two young people in the town of 2 Mai last year, remains in office. Thus, the request of the Judicial Inspection to suspend her from office was rejected.
