Major changes to the simple electronic passport: It will be able to be delivered by courier to any address in the country, and the shipping cost will be included in the price

​The simple electronic passport will be able to be sent by courier, to any address in Romania and not only to the address of domicile or residence, as is the case now, and the shipping costs will be included in the price of the passport, according to a project of the Ministry of Interior, on the agenda of Thursday’s Government meeting. The measures will be implemented by January 1, 2025.

Current situation: 20% of Romanians who get simple electronic passports opt for delivery by courier and bear the costs

The Ministry of Internal Affairs claims that in the process of issuing simple electronic passports it noticed “the increased need of citizens to receive/receive these travel documents, through courier services, not only at the home or residence address in the country (as currently provided by the normative framework), but at any address from the territory of Romania”.

Currently, the sending of the simple electronic passport, on the territory of Romania, to the domicile or residence of the holder/person who formulated the request, is accessed by approximately 20% of the applicants, bearing the shipping costs, says the MAI in the explanatory note.

Proposed changes: Delivery by courier to any address in the country, and the cost of shipping will be included in the price of the passport

In order to simplify the process of issuing simple electronic passports and estimating that the dispatch service to any indicated address in Romania will be accessed by the majority of applicants for this travel document, the representatives of the National Printing Office and the MAI agreed that, on account of the amount paid as against the value of the passport (respectively of its blanket), to be sent by courier services.

Currently, the simple e-passport costs 234 lei for persons under the age of 12 and 258 lei for people who have reached the age of 12.

The sending of the simple electronic passport, via courier services, to any address on the territory of Romania indicated by the holder/the person who formulated the request, other than the domicile/residence, will be operationalized from the date of ensuring the necessary technical conditions, but not later from January 1, 2025.
