A woman in Peru died by euthanasia

Ana Estrada, 47, suffered from a rare incurable condition called polymyositis, which left her muscles extremely weak. In the last decades of her life, she was bedridden and unable to breathe on her own.

His wish to end his life was granted at the end of a legal battle that began in 2016.

In Peru, a predominantly Roman Catholic country, assisting the suicide of a terminally ill patient is punishable by prison.

In 2022, the Supreme Court did not legalize assisted dying, but upheld a ruling that granted Estrada a reprieve to end her suffering.

“My body is failing, but my mind and spirit are happy”

In an interview with Reuters after her court win, Ana Estrada said she hoped to set a legal precedent for the right to assisted suicide.

“My body is failing, but my mind and spirit are happy. I want the last moments of my life to be exactly like this”, Estrada had also said in the interview.
