The woman was suffering from a degenerative disease. She died by euthanasia, after a long court battle ended with a historic ruling that allowed her to end her life with medical assistance, her lawyer said, Reuters reports.

Ana Estrada, 47 years old, has lived for the past three decades with a rare and incurable condition called polymyositis, which causes muscle weakness. She was bedridden and needed a ventilator to breathe.

She died on Sunday, announced her lawyer, Josefina Miro Quesada, on X.

Estrada, a psychologist, went to court in 2016 to fight for access to euthanasia, which is illegal in Peru. In 2022, the Latin American nation’s Supreme Court upheld a ruling that granted Estrada a waiver to end his life.

Euthanasia is illegal in most countries, including Peru, a predominantly Roman Catholic nation. In Latin America, Colombia, Ecuador and Cuba, this practice is allowed under certain conditions.
