A 33-year-old young woman from Galati county, facing a serious form of liver failure, caused by the excessive use of paracetamol, was saved by a liver transplant. With eyes full of tears and trust in God, the patient’s mother told that her daughter’s condition had deteriorated rapidly in the last few days, according to Antena 3 CNN. The 33-year-old woman has 4 children at home and received a new chance at life. “In the last week he was getting worse and worse. He started to turn yellow, vomiting, severe fatigue. We went to Tecuci and they sent us here urgently (no – “Sfântul Spiridon” Hospital in Iaşi), because here was the only option where someone could help her”, Maricica Iancu, the patient’s mother, revealed to the cited source.

The woman had gone into a coma

The surgical operation was performed by the medical team from the “St. Spiridon” Hospital in Iaşi, and the donor was a 56-year-old woman, in a state of brain death. The patient was transported to “Sfântul Spiridon” Hospital in Iasi with liver failure, caused by acute fulminant hepatitis. “The patient’s condition was serious, coma, and she was urgently admitted to intensive care. The transplant alert mechanism was triggered at the national level and the transplant coordinator here, from the “St. Spiridon” Hospital, identified the possibility of harvesting an organ from a brain-dead patient at the Bucharest University Hospital”, explained Diana Cimpoeşu, the coordinator of UPU-SMURD Iasi, according to Antena 3 CNN.

A transplant for the first time

This liver transplant is the second performed at the regional transplant center in Iaşi, and a compatible organ was found in just 24 hours, a first for this unit. It is also the first liver transplant performed in the region in such a short time, emphasized Raluca Neagu, the coordinator of the Regional Transplant Center from Iasi. Medical specialists draw attention to the risks associated with self-medication, especially in the case of excessive administration of paracetamol, which can be fatal for patients. “So, advice to patients who self-administer paracetamol in very large doses. The patient was also pregnant, had been pregnant, with an induced abortion. It is possible that this accumulation of drugs also contributed to liver failure”, added Raluca Neagu, according to Fanatik.
