Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc (PNL), president of the defense committee in the Senate, declared on Tuesday, in the solemn session of the Parliament dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Romania’s accession to NATO, that, looking today at the geopolitical context and analyzing the movements on the chessboard of the world, it becomes obvious that NATO membership is vital for Romania.

“Romania’s accession to NATO was the most important turning point in the history of our country after the fall of the communist regime. On the one hand, it was the point where we parted ways with the past. On the other hand, it was the beginning of the 20-year period, perhaps the most prosperous period in the history of our country. The last two decades have represented economic, social and institutional progress and have led to a huge leap in terms of Romania’s democratic culture”, said PNL Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc in the plenary session of the Parliament.

She specified that, honestly speaking, when we joined NATO, we thought that this political-military alliance would open the door to the EU, that it would contribute to attracting foreign investments and strengthening economic stability, and all these things happened. “We did not imagine then that, so quickly, we would be in a situation where NATO would be our life jacket in an increasingly insecure and tension-laden world. Looking today at the geopolitical context and analyzing the movements on the world chessboard, it becomes obvious that membership in NATO is vital for Romania,” Pauliuc emphasized.

She showed that “one of the great merits of the two mandates of the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, is his vision in relation to the North Atlantic Alliance”.

“I remember even today how the first important step as head of state in office was the convening of all parliamentary parties to sign a pact to allocate 2% of GDP to Defense. Klaus Iohannis did not only wonder what NATO can do for Romania, but what Romania can do for the Alliance. It should also be remembered that, after the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Romania was the country that instantly decided to increase defense allocations to 2.5% of GDP. All these decisions translated into an important signal of strength within the Alliance. This is how it came to be that, at the Madrid Summit in the summer of 2022, the Black Sea was declared an area of strategic interest. And this is the trigger for the transformation of the Kogălniceanu base into the largest such structure in NATO’s Eastern Flank”, emphasized Nicoleta Pauliuc.

The PNL senator also said that there are quantifiable things that show us that the Romanian state knew what it had to do and we navigated well through this informational ocean.

“That is why this opportunity of the President of Romania’s candidacy for the position of Secretary General of the strongest political-military alliance in the world was born,” she added. According to Nicoleta Pauliuc, it is an opportunity that we cannot afford to miss and that is why all institutional efforts and political and diplomatic energies should be combined to achieve this goal. The benefits would be tremendous.:

“For Romania, it means clear proof that we matter. Romania’s status would increase tremendously if we held this position. I can think of three immediate goals: full Schengen, Visa Waiver, OECD. For the Republic of Moldova, it would be a guarantee of increased security against the background of the destabilization attempts that the Russians are making there. For Ukraine, it would be a guarantee that NATO support will be maintained at very high levels. For Central and Eastern Europe, it would be the confirmation that our message regarding the Russian danger for peace in the region and in the world is being taken into account,” Pauliuc said.

“In conclusion, the 20 years of Romania’s membership in NATO represent a significant period in the evolution of our country and in the consolidation of security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region. With all the challenges and threats we face, it is essential that we remain committed to the alliance and work together to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all our citizens”, the senator said in the end.
