A 33-year-old young woman from Galati, facing a serious form of liver failure caused by the excessive use of paracetamol, was saved by a liver transplant.

The surgical operation was performed by the medical team from the Saint Spiridon Hospital in Iasi, and the donor was a 56-year-old woman, in a state of brain death. The patient was transported to the Saint Spiridon Hospital in Iasi with liver failure caused by acute fulminant hepatitis.

The second successful transplant in Iasi

This liver transplant is the second one performed at the regional transplant center in Iași, and a compatible organ was found in just 24 hours, a first for this unit.

Medical specialists draw attention to the risks associated with self-medication, especially in the case of excessive administration of paracetamol, which can be fatal for patients.

“So advice to patients who self-administer paracetamol in very high doses and the patient was pregnant and had been pregnant with a triggered abortion. It is also possible that this accumulation of drugs contributed to the liver failure”added Raluca Neagu.
