The president of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Tudorel Andrei, declared on Monday, April 1, that Romania is on a downward slope, as regards the prices of consumer goods and services. In his opinion, an inflation rate of more than 10% will be difficult to achieve in the near future.

“As far as the inflation rate is concerned, fortunately we are on a downward curve. A double-digit inflation rate, over 10%, will probably be difficult to achieve in the next period”, claimed Andrei, at the launch of a work on Romanian entrepreneurship. He emphasized that he issues this opinion as a researcher, reports Agerpres.

The analysis, entitled “Index of Romanian Entrepreneurship Sem. I, 2024”, shows that the inflation rate in 2023 was 10.4%. The index decreased from 2022, but it was raised. instead, in February 2024, the inflation rate stood at 7.1%, according to Eurostat. However, Romania was the first in terms of annual growth, at a considerable distance from Croatia (4.8%). The lowest inflation was recorded in Latvia and Denmark, both at 0.6%, followed closely by Italy at 0.8%.

The score of the Romanian Entrepreneurship Index is 49 points out of 100 in the first semester of 2024, corresponding to a moderate level of the entrepreneurial system. The four categories of the index are: critical or weak entrepreneurship, moderate entrepreneurship, emerging entrepreneurship and solid entrepreneurship.

In addition to the inflation rate, other important aspects indicated in the analysis for the year 2024 were: the unemployment rate in the year 2023 – of 2.93% – in a small decrease compared to the year 2022, the average net monthly salary which recorded an increase of 15.48% compared to 2022.

The entrepreneurs’ perception of the contextual developments with a negative influence on the activity of SMEs are: 79.56% bureaucracy and taxation, 28.93% the level of investments in the business environment, 55.98% the lending process of companies, 61.63% the perspective qualifications, skills and the level of professionalism on the workforce.

More than a third (38.61%) of SMEs estimated that the evolution of Romania’s economy will be favorable to the development of their businesses in 2024, and 30.57% of SMEs estimated an increase in the level of exports this year compared to 2023.

The inflation rate is the measure of the average variation in the prices of goods and services in an economy in a certain period of time.
