Prices explode before Easter. Lamb meat cannot be found in the markets below 40 lei per kilogram, and farmers say that price increases could follow. And cozonacs cost more than last year, and Romanian tomatoes are sold at exorbitant prices.

Demand dictates the market, so further price increases are expected as the Easter holidays approach.

In the markets, the kilogram of carcass lamb is sold for almost 55 lei. The lamb organs used in the Easter roast are also sold for 30 lei per kilogram.

Also, mutton pastrami ended up costing even 50 lei per kilogram.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, the price of meat increased in the last year by 10%, but the biggest price increases were for pork and lamb.

A Romanian eats, on average, about 3 kilograms of lamb or mutton per year, and the demand increases at Easter, because, according to tradition, lamb is also eaten during this period.

Live lamb, for example, is currently sold at farms for about 25 lei per kilogram, and experts estimate that as Easter approaches it will reach 30 lei.

Moreover, vegetables also reached record prices. Romanian tomatoes have already reached the markets, but the prices are keeping customers away.

A kilogram is sold even for 50 lei, and prices may increase in the coming period.
