Microsoft, the globally recognized tech giant, has recently introduced major changes in the system requirements for the latest update of its operating system, Windows 11, version 24H2. This change came as a surprise to many users who were used to the extended compatibility of previous versions.

Microsoft originally released Windows 11 a long time ago, but that version came with revised system requirements, thus excluding millions of devices running Windows 10 from being able to upgrade. Recently, Microsoft began testing new hardware restrictions that affect the ability of devices to run Windows 11.

In February 2024, it became apparent that devices without POPCNT instruction support would not be able to run Windows 11 tests or upgrade to the 24H2 release. This restriction has been expanded, and now to install or upgrade to Windows 11 version 24H2, a device’s processor must support SSE4.2, a requirement that excludes older processor models.

Windows 11 will be able to run on modern processors released in the last decade that include SSE4.2 support, but there are still many active devices that do not benefit from this feature. Windows 11 users affected by these new requirements will find themselves unable to upgrade to the new version, being stuck on Windows 11 version 23H2. The latter will cease to receive support in October 2025, coinciding with the end of support for Windows 10.

Users affected by this change have the option to revert to Windows 10, which, while nearing the end of its support period, offers up to a three-year support extension for a fee, extending support through October 2028. This policy shows a step taken by Microsoft to maintain a level of support for users with older devices.

Microsoft, with the changes imposed in the system requirements for Windows 11, emphasizes the importance of adapting to modern technology, but also puts pressure on users to update their hardware to maintain compatibility with the latest software updates. As Windows 11 continues to evolve, it’s becoming clear that Microsoft is moving its users toward a more secure and high-performance ecosystem, even if that means dropping support for older hardware.

This approach could create challenges for users and organizations that still rely on older devices, emphasizing the need for careful budget and resource planning for future hardware upgrades.
