A $3 iOS app now records spatial video at a higher resolution than Apple’s native camera app. Available in the App Store, Spatialify allows iPhone 15 Pro users to record 3D clips for Apple’s Vision Pro in either 1080p at 60fps or 4K at 30fps, both with HDR.

Recording with Apple’s native app only supports 1080p/30fps without HDR, so clips will be significantly sharper using Spatialify rather than the default camera app on the same phone.

Spatialify launched earlier this year as a tool for converting Apple’s spatial video clips (HEVC format) to play on non-Apple VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3. But once Meta added the conversion native HEVC on its headphones (the best-selling on the market), Spatialify’s superior recording capability could become the app’s “star” feature.

Engadget confirmed that Spatialify can produce 4K / 30fps files when properly set up. The publication also confirmed that videos shot with Spatialify look much sharper on the Vision Pro than those shot in Apple’s camera app. The HDR function also makes the light in videos look more realistic. And all for just $3.

It’s quite surprising that Apple limits its native camera app when it comes to fully exploiting the hardware capabilities on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, but not unusual. Halide, a popular iOS camera app, has surpassed Apple’s with various superior iOS photography features. Based on this history, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple added multi-feature video spatial recording to its camera app soon, especially now that we know its current hardware is more than capable.

Spatialify is available in the App Store for $3. You need an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max for spatial video.
