The release of the iPhone 16 is already a “known quantity” given all the leaks and information revealed by “insiders” over the past few months. Moreover, this release will not be a major one but will bring, again, incremental improvements for the four new smartphones from Apple. But it seems that more important changes are in store for the iPhone 17 series, and information about it has already started to appear on the Internet, even though the launch is a year and a half away.
The iPhone 17 could be the series many are waiting for
According to business analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities, quoted by 9to5mac, the iPhone 17 series will bring the biggest changes to Apple’s smartphone lineup in the past few years. It seems that Apple will admit that the iPhone “Plus” model was a hasty reaction to replace the “Mini” model and will replace this device in the range with something called “iPhone 17 Slim”. The latter could be slimmer than other models and will come with a smaller screen than the current Plus model. Thus, each individual iPhone model in the iPhone 17 range will have a different screen diagonal.
The basic model, iPhone 17 will keep the 6.1″ diagonal, appreciated by those who want a “compact flagship”. Then the iPhone 17 Slim model, which it replaces in the Plus range, will come with a 6.55 or 6.6″ screen (DSCC’s Ross Young claims it will be smaller), while the 17 Pro and Pro Max models they will keep the dimensions of the 16 Pro series: 6.3″, respectively 6.9″.
However, these will not be the only differences from the models of the iPhone 16 series. Not only the “Plus” model will receive a “downgrade”, but also the “simple” Pro model. The iPhone 17, 17 Slim and 17 Pro will all be built with a “more complex” aluminum body than the current one. This means that the only one that will retain the titanium construction will be the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The top model will be the only one to receive a new screen, with a more subtle cut-out for the face unlock sensors. Apple would adopt a new technology called “metalens” that allows the cutout in the screen to be reduced. However, all four iPhone 17 models could receive a major upgrade at the front camera level. They will ditch the old 12-megapixel camera in favor of a 24-megapixel camera.
In terms of internal configuration, the iPhone 17 and 17 Slim are expected with the Apple A18 or A19 processor and 8 GB of RAM, while the Pro/Pro Max models would adopt the new A19 Pro chip with 12 GB of RAM. The iPhone 16 models are all expected with 8GB of RAM as standard.
