A United Launch Alliance engineer, Dillon Rice, said the problem involved an oxygen safety valve on the top of the company’s Atlas rocket, according to The Guardian.

It is not known when the team will try again to launch pilots to the International Space Station for a week. It was the latest delay for Boeing’s first crewed flight, which has been suspended for years due to capsule problems.

“In a situation like this, if we see a certain feature that we haven’t seen before, we’re just not willing to take any chances,” Rice said.

NASA hired Boeing and SpaceX a decade ago to transport astronauts to and from the space station, paying private companies billions of dollars.

SpaceX is handling the orbital taxi from 2020.

The unmanned Starliner’s debut test flight in 2019 ended up in the wrong orbit and failed to reach the space station, forcing Boeing to repeat the demonstration before astronauts could fly. Following further revisions last year, the company had to repair the capsule’s parachutes.
