The first Romanian cherries have ripened and they don’t cost a fortune. Sweet and juicy, they are sold on the side of the road, in Prahova, for 30 lei per kilogram, half the price in markets and supermarkets.

“Welcome to the cherries! 30 lei”. The orchards in Păuleşti-Prahova have taken on the color of May cherries. The locals pick the fruits early and sell them in front of the gate, in the commune near Ploiesti. Alexandru Matei has over 50 trees that have borne rich fruit.

Matei’s business with organic cherries

“Picked with care and attention, the cherries from Păuleşti town, Prahova county, end up being sold on the side of the road. The price of a kg of cherries is a maximum of 30 lei, while in the big markets or supermarkets, it reaches 70 lei lei”, transmits Alin Stan, Observer reporter.

“We kept the tradition from our parents, from our grandparents, with cherries. We have organic cherries. Clean and natural. Whoever wants to eat, come to Păuleşti. Some come specially. And they came from Bucharest,” he says Matei Alexandru, fruit grower.

In the markets, cherries cost 70 lei/kg

Drivers passing through Păuleşti can’t resist seeing the Romanian cherries and not stopping. Especially since in the markets, imported fruits are sold for 70 lei per kilogram. “I came from Ploiesti. I passed by yesterday and I saw the cherry trees full and I say: they have appeared! I see the tree here and I imagine that it is from it. That one on the market… who knows?”, says a buyer.

“I haven’t bought it before, but I’m going to buy it now. It’s the first time and I want to taste it. They’re reasonable in price,” adds a woman.

Păulești commune is known for its cherry orchards planted by the locals many years ago. In many families, cherry trees are a tradition. “We are a commune blessed by God and we really have this cherry fruit that is all over the commune. I don’t think there is any house or household that doesn’t have a cherry tree in the yard”, says Sandu Tudor, mayor of Păuleşti.

Every year, the locals of Păuliş organize the cherry festival. This year, everyone is waiting for the fair that will take place on the weekend of June 15-16.
