A new video that has surfaced on social media shows how the Russian military once again distorted reality when it triumphantly announced the destruction of a German-made Gepard anti-aircraft missile.

The video recording appeared on Russian Telegram networks after the Russian Defense Ministry announced in one of its updates on the progress of the “special military operation” the other day that its forces destroyed a Gepard armored car with the help of a kamikaze drone.

But the footage shows how the Russian Lancet drone ricochets off the armor of the military vehicle, exploding without causing much damage to it.

However, some netizens noted that the battleship’s radar antenna was not active when it was targeted, suggesting that it was in fact abandoned by its crew, but this is not entirely clear.

Whatever the situation, the appearance of the recording triggered a wave of ironies on social networks, taking into account that in the daily assessment presented in video format by Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, the Russian Ministry of Defense presented 3 videos of the destruction of some equipment of the Ukrainian army, but only showed a screenshot of the recording of the Cheetah hitting.

The exaggerations of Konashenkov, the spokesman for the Moscow Defense Ministry, are already notorious, having previously announced the destruction of some Western combat equipment before it was actually even sent to Ukraine.

Sergei Narishkin, the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, added to this on February 20, announcing that Moscow’s armed forces had destroyed “most” of the NATO equipment received by Ukraine.

He cited at the time the destruction of 1,170 air defense systems, 440 tanks, 1,510 infantry fighting vehicles, 655 artillery systems received by Ukraine from NATO partners, figures several times higher than the actual number of those who arrived in Kiev.

What are Gepard armors

Although it has sometimes been mistakenly presented in the press as a “tank”, the Gepard is actually a mobile, self-propelled, armored anti-aircraft system. Developed by the German arms industry in the 1960s, it can operate in all weather conditions.

Manufactured by military manufacturer Krauss Maffei-Wegmann (KMW), the Gepard system was supplied to countries such as Germany, Belgium, Romania and the Netherlands.

Primarily intended for anti-aircraft defense, the anti-aircraft system can also be directed at ground targets. A tracked armored Gepard, carrying three crew members, can reach a maximum speed of 65 km/h and has an autonomy of 550 kilometers.

The air battleship features independent target tracking and surveillance radars and comes with “state-of-the-art training and simulation equipment,” according to KMW. Equipped with two 35mm automatic cannons, the “Gepard system’s high ground mobility and rapid turret rotation enable extremely short reaction times needed to engage aerial threats.”

The Gepard is built on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank. It is not only effective against fighter aircraft, attack helicopters and missiles, but can “also successfully combat drones”, according to the manufacturer.

A video that appeared on social media last December confirmed the effectiveness of these armored vehicles against Russian missiles, showing how the Ukrainian military shot down a cruise missile with a Gepard during a new wave of attacks launched by Russia against Ukraine.

In February, the German government said it had delivered 32 Gepards to Ukraine and was preparing more.
