Thus, the Romanian Lottery will launch the “Team Romania” ticket, which will cost 5 lei. In total, one million lottery tickets will be issued, and 30% of the proceeds will go to COSR. Specifically, if all the one million lottery tickets are sold, COSR will collect 1.5 million lei, which is approximately 300,000 euros.

The government explained in the GEO of April 23 that this step is necessary because there is no money to finance the athletes at the Paris Olympics.

“Considering that there are not enough funds to ensure the financing of Romania’s participation in the XXXIII edition of the Summer Olympic Games – Paris 2024 and taking into account the time interval necessary to carry out the activities related to the participation and in order to eliminate any risk of non-participation with the consequence of prejudice images of Romania internationally” the document states.

81 Romanians qualified for the Paris Olympics so far

Team Romania currently has 81 athletes qualified for the 2024 Olympics, in 12 sports. Weightlifters Mihaela Cambei (cat. 49 kg) and Loredana Toma (cat. 71 kg) are also qualified, but the formalization is missing, reported Agerpres.

The Romanian athletes qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games until now:

Athletics (5): Delvine Relin Meringor (marathon), Andrea Miklos (400 m), Alina Rotaru-Kottmann (long), Joan Chelimo Melly (marathon), Bianca Ghelber (hammer throw)

Swimming (2): David Popovici (100 m free, 200 m free), Vlad Stancu (800 m free, 1,500 m free)

Box (1): Lâcrâmioara Perijoc (cat. 54 kg)

Canoe (3): Cătălin Chirilă (C1 – 1,000 m), Ilie Sprîncean, Oleg Nuţă (C2 – 500 m);

Rowing (44 quota places): women’s double sculls, lightweight category, women’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, women’s four sculls, women’s four sculls, women’s 8+1, men’s double sculls, men’s double sculls, men’s four sculls, men’s four sculls, men’s 8+1;

Artistic gymnastics (6): 5 quota places – the female team; Andrei Muntean;

Rhythmic gymnastics (1): Annaliese Dragan;

Fights (1): Andreea Beatrice Ana (cat. 53 kg)

Water polo (13): 13 quota places – men’s team;

Fencing (1): Mălina Călugăreanu (flute);

Table tennis (3): 3 quota places – the female team;

Yachting (1): Ebru Bolat (class Ylca 6).

The 33rd edition of the Summer Olympic Games will take place in France, in Paris, between July 26 and August 11.
