US President Joe Biden came prepared with an electoral roast of Trump on Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. The event was hosted this year by “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost.

Joe Biden began his speech directly with a jab at Trump, calling him “Sleepy Don,” an intentional shift from “Bankrupt Don” after his opponent called him “sleepy.” The two addressed each other several names in this electoral campaign, mocking each other’s vulnerable points.

At the century-old event, often called the “nerd ball” in Washington, hundreds of journalists, politicians and celebrities socialized in a massive banquet hall, writes Reuters.

During the Correspondents’ Dinner a crowd of protesters outside criticized support for Israel’s war against Hamas.

Inside, Biden used the annual event to grill his Republican rival Donald Trump for immaturity, poke fun at his own advanced age and criticize and admonish the Washington press corps.

“Yes, age is an issue. I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old,” Biden joked.

Biden, who is 81, later added of former President Trump, 77: “Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually supports me.”

Trump reacted to the roast, calling it “really stupid” in a post on his social network, Truth Social. “Fuck Joe was an absolute disaster! It can’t get any worse than this!” he said.

Protesters holding signs outside the event at the Washington Hilton chanted about the deaths of journalists in Gaza. Hundreds of protesters encouraged journalists to boycott the annual event and shouted down administration officials as the cups entered.

Biden avoided large protests outside the hotel by arriving through a rear entrance, where he was met by smaller groups of protesters calling for a ceasefire.

Biden offered some advice to reporters.

“I’m honestly not asking you to take anyone’s side. I ask you to rise to the seriousness of the moment. Get past the numbers and the crazy moments and the distractions, the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics, and focus on what’s actually at stake,” Biden said.
