We all know how well-known the city of Iasi is, given that the country’s first university is located here, how many students come here from other cities, especially to do their higher studies here. But, a more special aspect: what do they really think about the city and how it works? Is it or isn’t it what they imagined?

90% of the people I met at college, at the “Al.I. Cuza”, I am not from Iasi. This is how, whether I wanted to or not, I learned a lot of opinions, better or worse, happier or sadder, about life in this city.

Most of the students I spoke with seem happy to have left their hometown, and see this opportunity as a key to their desired future. Like a place that I feel like a second “home”. And that either because of the people or the places.

It is indeed a city of many possibilities, as recognized by everyone I spoke to. Concerts, films, festivals, cafes, bars, everything for everyone…

But, everything has a price. Usually a high one. One that makes you think twice about going out on the weekend or staying home.

On the other hand, not all fun with friends requires money, as Iași has parks in every neighborhood, as well as a botanical garden with free access for those from UAIC.

In addition, the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library offers both accredited sources of information for projects or works, as well as study and reading spaces. This also has the online subscription option, through which already scanned books can be accessed with a click.

Student status in Iași also gives you discounts, both at museums, cinemas and public transport. Although sometimes fascinated by the fact that they have moved to a city that has buses and trams, students tend to be disappointed and annoyed by them when it comes to the congestion and traffic that makes them late for classes in the morning.

Although there are also negative aspects, when it comes to the city’s faculties young people are satisfied with the decision to move here, often Iași having better education plans than other cities.

Each college has a volunteer association or activities where you can create connections with those with the same passions and aspirations. Involvement in these appears to be recognized and valued by employers, providing an advantage both during and after college.

However, all ad mit, in the end: no city is perfect in all respects. There are always pluses and minuses, things that you fondly tell your mother on the phone or others that you complain to your father about and tell him that he was better off at home.

Even if there are some things that can be improved in the way the city operates, you will put them on the back burner: the faculty remains the important one. The one that, in the end, should bring you satisfaction and meaning in life. (Sara MOLDOVEANU)
