According to popular beliefs, in the month of April, popularly known as Luna Prier, the peasants used to predict the weather, say the researchers of the “Anton Badea” Ethnographic Museum in Reghin. According to these “omens” or “predictions”, if the weather is nice and warm in April, it means that May will be cold and gloomy, but if the weather is gloomy in Prier Moon, then May will have sunny weather and high temperatures.
“The month of April, the fourth month of the year, bears the popular name “Prier”, from the verb “to prii” and refers to the favorable period for spring agricultural work or household work. In some areas of the country, this month is also called “Florar”, “Luna Florilor” or “Traista-n Băț”, a name used when the weather is deceptive, with cold and dry weather for sowing. During this period, the fields were closed for grazing, the herds were formed, the sheep were sheared before being taken to the mountains, the cattle pens, the stables, etc. were built and repaired. In Prier’s Moon, weather predictions are made, thus a series of superstitions are born: if in April there will be beautiful and warm weather, then May will have cold weather, if in Prier there is gloomy weather, then May will have beautiful weather“, say the museologists from the municipality of Reghin.
Also, according to the representatives of the Ethnographic Museum “Anton Badea”, the holidays in April, which have a fixed date, include many traditional practices and customs, rituals intended to “renew time”, the most important and known throughout the country being the customs of the Day of Flowers and Saint George.
