April is National Vaccination Awareness Month, and this year’s edition focuses on the importance of measles vaccination.

Vaccination coverage in Romania for all types of vaccine has decreased in recent years from 90% to less than 80%, the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, said on Monday. He drew attention, in a televised show, to the low interest in vaccination in the case of measles, given the increase in the incidence of this disease and the deaths already recorded. Since the beginning of 2023, almost 9,700 illnesses have been reported in Romania.

April is the national vaccination information month, and this year’s edition focuses on the importance of measles vaccination, in the context in which the Romanian health authorities declared a national epidemic last December. The National Institute of Public Health recalls that measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world, which spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes, and the virus remains active in the air or on infected surfaces for up to two hours.
