The representatives of the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) specified, on Monday, that the total number of citizens with the right to vote registered in the electoral register on March 31 is 18,965,288, with 24,454 more than the last information from the end of February, when there were 18,940,834 Romanian voters.

  • According to the 2021 population census, Romania had a total population (including minors, who do not have the right to vote) of 19,053,815.

The differences appear as a result of the current operations carried out by the mayors in the Electoral Register related to the administrative-territorial units led by them and the import of data from the General Directorate of Passports (DGP), the AEP press release also says.

The Parliamentary Electoral Authority also specifies that, between March 1 and March 31, the following deletions were made in the electoral register at the level of the town halls:

– 19,507 people were deregistered as a result of death, according to the provisions of art. 37 of Law no. 208/2015 regarding the election of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, as well as for the organization and operation of the Permanent Electoral Authority, with subsequent amendments and additions;

– 275 people were dismissed as a result of falling within the provisions of art. 39 of the same law, regarding the deletion from the Electoral Register of voters who were prohibited from exercising the right to vote or were placed under a ban.

A number of 89 people regained their electoral rights as a result of the expiration of the erasure period.

The number of voters who turned 18 between March 1 and March 31 is 19,017, these being registered in the Electoral Register ex officio, by the Permanent Electoral Authority, based on the communication of the General Directorate for the Records of Persons (DGEP).

The data imported from the General Directorate of Passports on 18.03.2024 reveal that 25,130 new voters entered the records, according to the cited source.

AEP mentions that, of the total number of Romanian voters appearing in the Electoral Register, 18,020,261 have their domicile or residence in the country, and 945,027 have their domicile abroad and are CRDS passport holders.

According to Law no. 208/2015, the Electoral Register is a national IT system for registering and updating the identification data of Romanian citizens with the right to vote and the information regarding their rounding at the polling stations. The electoral register is structured by counties, municipalities, cities, communes, for Romanian citizens with domicile or residence in the country. The persons authorized to carry out operations in the Electoral Register including Romanian citizens domiciled or residing in the country are the mayors or the persons designated by the mayors, by provision, according to the law.
