The Danube River as a border between Bulgaria and Romania is not part of the Schengen Agreement. This means that the border controls will not be reduced, and the firing lines, several kilometers long, between the two sides of the Ruse – Giurgiu Bridge, will continue, the Bulgarian publication Focus reports, quoted by Rador.

Also, the dissatisfaction of those waiting to cross the border will accumulate. Bulgaria and Romania enter Schengen with the air and maritime borders, but not with the river ones.

The European Commission concluded that the border points across the Danube are considered land borders, and they are not included in the agreement on the free movement of citizens. On Friday, in the area of the Ruse-Giurgiu border point, a column of twenty shots was formed.

With the construction of a buffer parking lot, the problem was partially solved – the shooting no longer blocks traffic on Bulgaria and Tutrakan boulevards in Ruse. However, the waiting hours and drivers’ dissatisfaction continue.

Taxi drivers from Ruse, who often transport passengers to Bucharest airport, commented on the decision of partial admission to Schengen as discriminatory. Even the Romanians are not satisfied with the partial integration in the European area of free movement. In the last 24 hours, over 3,400 trucks and 2,400 cars and coaches crossed the Ruse-Giurgiu Bridge, in both directions, most of them waiting for hours. And nothing will change for them, even after the two countries’ partial entry into Schengen.
